History of the Domaine de Rambouillet
The Château de Rambouillet owes its renown to the verdant forest, abounding in game, in the heart of which it was built. This old mediaeval fortress was gradually transformed into a stately home and adorned with elegant decors by its illustrious owners: the D’Angennes and Toulouse-Penthièvre families, Louis XVI and Napoleon I, as well as Presidents of France. The Rambouillet estate also enables you to visit two exceptional historic buildings: Queen Marie-Antoinette's dairy and the Shell Cottage. These two buildings were created in the heart of 150 hectares of historical gardens, listed as Remarkable Gardens. Queen Marie-Antoinette’s Dairy and the Shell Cottage.
